My priority was to be appreciated in Mohenjo Daro and I passed that test: Pooja Hegde

Pooja Hegde

Pooja Hegde (Miss Universe India 2010 2nd Runner-Up) made a dream debut in Bollywood — as Hrithik Roshan's heroine in an Ashutosh Gowariker directorial. But after that ecstatic high came an agonising low — 'Mohenjo Daro' failed commercially and was panned critically. Most newcomers would have crumbled under the pressure and dejection, but Pooja is made of tougher stuff. In an exclusive interview with BT, the stunning model-turned-actress talks about films, failure and future plans. Excerpts...

Pooja Hegde

Was it easy bouncing back after 'Mohenjo Daro' failed to live up to expectations?
It was a great debut. My priority was to be appreciated in the film, and I passed that test. The audience liked me and felt that I have good screen presence. You can't do anything about a film's fate at the box office.
But it was widely perceived as a Hrithik Roshan film in which the heroine didn't have much to do...
That's true, but that mindset is changing. Women-centric films are being made and they are doing well. A few years down the line, this won't even be a topic of discussion because people are appreciating Deepika Padukone, Kangana Ranaut and Priyanka Chopra — they add value to the films they do. It's become more script-centric; as long as we are making good films, it doesn't matter whether they are hero-centric or heroine-centric.
You had done a few films down South before entering Bollywood. Is the South industry a stepping stone to Hindi films?
I have never looked at it that way. Films are films, whether it's down South or here; only the language is different. The fact that I have done films down South didn't boost or hamper my chances here. In fact, I was still shooting for both my Telugu films when I met Ashu sir for 'Mohenjo Daro'. During the audition, he gave me five scenes with lengthy dialogues. Once I cleared them, he gave me a song to dance to. So, my Bollywood entry was no cakewalk. I went through a series of auditions to get the part.

Pooja Hegde

Are you still in touch with Hrithik?
Yes. He messaged me the other day, saying that he loves my photographs online. Even when the pictures from our shoot came out, he had told me that I was looking good and had done a fab job.
Many people criticised 'Mohenjo Daro' for shoddy research. How did you prepare for the role?
Ashu sir did his research well and had also hired a team of archaeologists. His office was full of books on the subject; he was like a walking encyclopedia on Mohenjo Daro. As far as my preparations were concerned, when I entered the set and slipped into that attire, I was immediately transported into that era. The only thing I had to work on was to remain fit so that I could carry off those clothes and the headgear. My main prep for the film was practising dance because when you are dancing next to Hrithik Roshan, you have to get your steps right.

Pooja Hegde

Did you take a souvenir from the sets?
No, but now that you have reminded me, I will message Ashu sir to send me the statue of the dancing girl. He has four of them in his office.
What sort of Bollywood offers are you getting now?
I have been offered a couple of scripts and I am going through them. I am waiting for the right opportunity and script. As far as the type of movies I am offered is concerned, it's a mix. I have been offered both period films and the regular fare.
If you had to choose a genre, what would it be?
It is very difficult. I love watching rom coms and hence, would love to be part of one. I haven't done anything like that till date. I would love to be part of a young love story. In fact, I have a long list of what I want to do.

Sonam Kapoor & Others Bollywood Star’s Special Screening

One day to go for Hrithik RoshanYami Gautam‘s much awaited Kaabil! We are down to the wire. Kaabil‘s intriguing plotline has already caught everyone’s attention. Last night, the Kaabil team had organised a special screening of the film. The cast and crew of the team were present – the lead pair – Yami and Hrithik rocked the casual look. Rakesh Roshan and Rohit Roy were present at the screening along with Urvashi Rautela (what was she wearing?)  Among others, Hrithik’s neighbour – Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna, Madhavan, Anupama Chopra, Rekha, Sonam Kapoor, Anil Kapoor were present. Honestly, did not quite like what Sonam was wearing for once. Anil Kapoor and Yami Gautam were spotted laughing over something. We wonder what the joke was. And… Hrithik’s former wife – Sussanne Roshan was there for this screening as well.
Two days ago, a special screening was held for close friends and associates, Sussanne was present even then. That’s when, post the screening she had taken to social media to call his blind act ‘one of the most heated performances in the history of Indian Cinema.’ And now Anil Kapoor has also showered praises on Kaabil. ‘Sanjay Gupta and Rakesh Roshan have delivered a hit with incredible performances by Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam.’ Rishi Kapoor couldn’t stop gushing about the film either –  ‘Winner all the way.
Thrilling, chilling, entertaining’. Shabana Azmi said, ‘What a bravura performance by @iHrithik in #Kabil. He takes your breath away! Congratulations @_SanjayGupta for making such a gripping film. @RakeshRoshan_N congratulations for Kaabil. @iHrithik will sweep all the awards this year. Will watch it again for sure’. Akshay Kumar also Tweeted about Hrithik Rohsan’s performance in the film – Just watched #Kaabil, @iHrithik’s sincere effort is commendable,he’s evidently given it his all. A sensitive film with captivating storyline
Kabail directed by Sanjay Gupta and produced by Rakesh Roshan is a story of two visually challenged who fall in love and take off on a new adventure, but tragedy strikes and that’s when Hrithik’s character decides to take revenge all the way. The music composed by Rajesh Roshan is already declared a hit. Clashing with Kaabil is Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees directed by Rahul Dholakia. The film also stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Mahira Khan. Shah Rukh will be playing a bootlegger of Gujarat.

'Bigg Boss 10' contestant Priyanka Jagga bags a Bollywood film

Priyanka Jagga

Last night's Weekend Ka Vaar was one of the best episodes in recent times. Every Bigg Boss fan shares the feeling. The dramatic exit of Priyanka Jagga has united the housemates and lifted their spirits.
If you have been following this season of Bigg Boss, then you definitely know what foul-mouthed Priyanka Jagga was upto. From abusing co-contestants to talking ill about Manu's deceased mother to getting all physical and aggressive in the name of task, the mother of two had been on the nerves of contestants as well as viewers.

bog boss 10

But it seems like Priyanka is in no mood to give any justification. We are not saying this, but her first message post quitting the show says it all, "My Home is the best Home.. I m home now.. Thanks Bigg Boss for letting me go ..All well when ends well". (sic)
Even more shocking is the conduct of Priyanka's brother, Sameer, on social media. He is blindly taking his sister's side and lashing out at Salman Khan through his Facebook posts.
He claims that all this hype around her sister is being created just for TRPs.

Priyanka Jagga

Sameer Jagga wrote this on his facebook wall: "TRP ka Darama hai BIGG BOSS ka Abhi bhi priyanka ka naam use kar raha hai or End tak karaigai.Rahi baat Salman ki. Aaj 30 Saal mai jitnai log salman ko jaantai ha. Sayad 3 months mai hahaha????" (sic)
But later on he deleted the post. Also according to reports, he further claimed that popular celebrity contestant Bani Judge would eventually win the game.

Bollywood Actress Gul Panag: If stars take political stand, their bread and butter is hit

Gul Panag

Bollywood actress Gul Panag says Indian celebrities do take a stand on issues but have to be prepared for the backlash. The actress feels one has to be very strong to withstand the massive opposition they might face for voicing an opinion.

Gul Panag

"Indian stars do take a stand, look at what you do to them once they take a stand. The backlash that comes, you have to be prepared for it and I think (you) really grow a thick skin as well," Gul said.
"But then the bread and butter gets affected because the power of the public narrative is such. My point is, the reason a lot of famous people will not take a stand is because of the fact that they would probably be unpopular." Recently, Hollywood actress Merly Streep's speech criticising US President-elect Donald Trump was highly praised. Several celebrities, both in Hollywood and Bollywood, raved about her brave comment.

Her speech, however, also drew comparison with Indian stars, with several people questioning whether the Indian film industry can take a political stand like that as well. In the past, stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir, Salman have faced backlash owing to their comments on issues of the country and recently on row over Pakistani actors working in Hindi films. Gul, who also contested elections as an Aam Aadmi Party candidate, says both the 'left wing and right wing' can shun people having opposing views.

Gul Panag

When asked if the moment a celebrity associates itself with a political party a certain section starts shunning them, Gul says, "Not just a certain section, not just political parties, I think any celebrity who tends to challenge the narrative will get some backlash, it depends what the narrative is, so it's not always a right wing or a left wing narrative."

Citing an example of a friend, a 'successful Bollywood actor who took a particular view on Pakistani actors not being welcomed in Indian films', the actress says she has been 'ostracised by the 'liberals'.' Gul says the situation is such that her actor-friend, who "also has a life outside of acting, pursues hobbies like horse riding," now has been shunned even by the industry.

"I think everybody should have an opinion but the fact is he has been ostracised by the film industry at large for having that opinion. I don't agree with his opinion personally but that's his opinion and he has been ostracised and that's happened by the industry."

It’s like you can’t go to a friend’s house without being linked to her (Katrina). I don’t want to overthink and stop interacting with people because of this. After a while, you stop worrying about the repercussions and let people make their own assumptions. You get used to it; else, you won’t be able to have a conversation with anyone.”

Katrina Kaif

Probe him further to know if he’s single and he smartly concludes “Let’s just say, I am chilling at the moment and would like to continue doing that. Katrina

Bollywood Actress Saira Banu Nice Images

Saira Banu

Saira Banu was born in India to actress Naseem Banu and film producer Mian Ehsan-ul-Haq, who produced the film Phool in Mumbai and film Wadah in Pakistan. Her grandmother was the courtesan Chamiyan Bai, also known as Shamshad Begum of Delhi (not to be confused with the famous playback singer of yesteryear Shamshad Begum who was from Amritsar, Punjab). Her niece is former actress Shaheen Banu who is the daughter of her brother Sultan. Saira spent a significant part of her childhood in London, and went to finishing school. Her grandmother was from Hasanpur (Uttar Pradesh).

Saira Banu

She was 16 years old in 1960, the year she made her debut to Hindi films.[2] She said in a programme, that she had basic talent and little dancing experience. Her peers all were classically trained, which was why she wasn't put in the top league. Saira started taking Kathak and Bharata Natyam lessons with success and trained herself professionally. Soon she became a dancer and her films flaunted more of her dance. Banu made her acting debut opposite Shammi Kapoor in the 1961 film Junglee for which she earned her first Filmfare nomination as Best Actress. The famous song from this movie "Yaahoo!! Chahe Koi Mujhe Junglee Kahe" sung by Mohammed Rafi was a big success. 'Junglee' was written by Aghajani Kashmeri (aka Kashmiri and Agha Jani), who also coached her in Urdu dialogue delivery, given his background in Urdu literature and poetry from Lucknow. 'Junglee' also instantly made her a successful actress throughout the 1960s and early 1970s. Her image was that of a romantic heroine for love stories in the 1960s till 1967. She did one more film opposite Shammi Kapoor named Bluff Master directed by Manmohan Desai. Some of her successful romantic films include 'Jhuk Gaya Aasman' and 'Aayi Milan Ki Bela' with Rajendra Kumar and 'April Fool' with Biswajeet and 5 films with actor Joy Mukherjee - 'Aao Pyar Karen', 'Saaz Aur Awaaz', 'Door Ki Awaz', 'Yeh Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hai' and 'Shagird'. She did double role in the film 'Yeh Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hai'. After her mairrage in 1966, her first film to release was Aman opposite Rajendra Kumar and she continued to act as the lead heroine till 1977. But it is said that the turning point of her career was the comedy and love story Padosan in 1968 opposite Sunil Dutt, which brought her to the top league of the successful actresses and she started receiving more offers.

Saira Banu

Her films with Navin Nishchol were very successful like Victoria No. 203 and Paise Ki Gudiya. In an interview she quoted that she regretted missing chance of working with Rajesh Khanna. She quoted "I was supposed to work with him in 'Choti Bahu'(1971) but I could not because I was ill. I shot with him for two days and found that he was very charming, humble and a shy person".[3] She did earn three additional Filmfare nominations as Best Actress for Shagird (1967), Diwana (1968), and Sagina (1974). Her valiant attempts to establish a reputation as an actress after Sagina and Bairaag (all 3 with Dilip Kumar) and films like Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Chaitali met with limited success although each of them were critically acclaimed. Her only film to be successful at box office opposite her husband was Gopi. She also had stable pairing with Dharmendra which included Jwar Bhata, Aadmi Aur Insaan, Resham Ki Dori, Pocket Maar, International Crook, and Chaitali. She also did 'Pyar Mohabbat' with Dev Anand and did two films with Manoj Kumar, namely 'Poorab Aur Paschim' and 'Balidan'. She established herself as versatile actor, post her marriage, with her performances in Padosan, Victoria 203, Jhuk Gaya Aasman, Sagina, Chaitali - with each of them belonging to different genres. She was paired with Vinod Khanna in Aarop wherein the song Naino Mein Darpan Hai became a chartbuster in 1974. Her pairing with Sunil Dutt continued to be good at box office with films like Nehle Pe Dehla being successful in 1976. The song Sawan Ka Mahina Aagaya became very popular in 1976. However, with films like Daaman Aur Aag, Mounto, Zameer, Koi Jeeta Koi Haara becoming disasters and with some of her films being kept on hold for release like Faisla, Mera Vachan Geeta Ki Kasam, Aarambh, she decided to not sign any more films. Hence in 1976, Saira chose to end her film career. Subsequently she weathered a storm in her marriage in 1980, when her husband married a girl named Asma, which was quickly resolved. She then appeared in a cameo opposite her husband in Duniya (1984) wherein the song Teri Meri Zindagi became very popular. Her last film Faisla where she was cast opposite Vinod Mehra which was completed in 1976 released in 1988.
